During 2018, HDS Australia has assisted the City of West Torrens in the design of a number of road reconstruction projects. This has included Birmingham Street, and involved preliminary design, final design, construction cost estimate and construction tender documents.
Given that Birmingham Street is located within a commercial and industrial precinct, there is a high demand for on-street parking during business hours along with a high percentage of trucks. Indented car parking was therefore included in the design to ensure that car parking space was maximised, whilst still maintaining appropriate road width for heavy vehicles to access properties on Birmingham Street. Spoon drains were included between the indented car parking and the carriageway, with careful attention to road levels required to ensure adequate drainage within a very flat environment, whilst minimising cut and fill levels to avoid impact on underground services and property boundary levels. The design also included streetscape improvements through the use of brick paving for the indented car parking and new footpath, along with installation of new street trees.
Construction was completed by Camco SA earlier in 2018, with positive feedback provided to HDS Australia from the contractor and Council regarding the accuracy and completeness of the design. HDS Australia looks forward to working further with the City of West Torrens in 2019.
