Construction has recently been completed on road improvement works along Sullivan Drive and at the intersection of the Lincoln Highway and Sullivan Drive, close to the Port Lincoln Airport in North Shields, South Australia. This project was designed and documented by HDS Australia for the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula.
The Lincoln Highway is a two lane, two way highway connecting Port Lincoln and Port Augusta, while Sullivan Drive is a rural road providing access to residential properties and aquaculture operations on the Point Boston Peninsula. Further residential development is planned for the Point Boston area which has necessitated the upgrade of the Lincoln Highway and Sullivan Drive intersection.
The works consist of new protected left and right turn lanes at the intersection, which have been installed to improve safety and reduce the impacts of traffic turning into Sullivan Drive on through movements on the Lincoln Highway. The project also involved a realignment of Sullivan Drive. Prior to the works Sullivan Road ran immediately adjacent to the northern boundary of the Port Lincoln Airport. To improve the safety of airport operations, Sullivan Drive has been realigned to the north to maximise the separation between the road and the main airport runway.
The HDS Australia project team consisted of John Olson (Project Executive), Barry Fishburn (Design Specialist), Tim Viner Smith (Project Manager) and Herman Zhou (Design / Draftsman). HDS Australia was responsible for all aspects of the design and documentation, including the engagement of surveyors and geotechnical specialists, engagement with key stakeholders including DPTI, development of the functional, preliminary and final design drawings, and preparation of specification documentation suitable for the tendering of the project for construction. Design work was completed in late 2013, with construction commencing in 2014.
