HDS Australia has recently completed a concept design road safety audit for the Cockatoo to Gembrook Open Space Linkage, which is a 7km extension to the Emerald-Gembrook Recreational Trail that will run alongside local streets in Cockatoo. The Emerald-Gembrook Recreational Trail is located in Cardinia Shire Council and runs alongside some sections of the Puffing Billy Railway.
HDS Australia was engaged to undertake a road safety audit of six sites along the Linkage which include intersections, pedestrian crossings and on-street cycle facilities. The road safety audit considered issues that might impact on the safety of path users and drew upon HDS Australia's extensive experience in the area of safety for vulnerable road users.
This project is a good example of how the road safety audit process provides an effective way to gain specialist road safety input, particulaly for projects such as recreational paths and rail trails for which only small sections of the route are close to traffic. The new Linkage will provide an excellent extension to the recreational facilities near Puffing Billy, and HDS Australia is pleased to have been involved in the project and contribute to improving road safety for path users.
